Watercolor Wednesday: Fall Paintings

I haven’t shared a Watercolor Wednesday post on my blog for awhile now, but I promise that I’ve been doing some painting. I wanted to share a few fall-inspired paintings that I’ve finished in the last couple of months. Most are small paintings (4×6″ in size) as I had a growing pile of leftover scrap pieces of watercolor paper. But, these paintings make perfect greeting cards! The first painting I’m going to share is titled “Lily”.

Lily

“Lily” is a fox kit inspired by an idea that I had for a children’s book. I tried to keep most of the painting loose by letting the water and paint pigment do its magic by spreading to make the impression of soft fur. The only details I added on this painting are the eyes, nose, claws, and some extra whisps of fur to make Lily appear extra fuzzy. Does she look sweet enough to be in a children’s book? “Lily” is a 9×12″ painting.

Fall Harvest

“Fall Harvest” was completed on our last trip up to the family cabin this past fall. I wanted a simple pumpkin painting with the addition of a tiny mouse because, well, adding an animal to any painting makes the painting just a tiny bit sweeter. “Fall Harvest” is a 4×6″ painting.

Chubby Cheeker

Do you like this title? I have to give my husband credit for almost all the witty painting titles, and “Chubby Cheeker” is no exception. Any Chubby Checker fans out there? I’ve never painted a chipmunk, nor fall leaves, and I wanted to challenge myself in doing both. “Chubby Cheeker” is a 4×6″ painting.

Harvest Hare

“Harvest Hare” was inspired by the smart little rabbits that inevitably find an opening through our fences and into our vegetable garden each year. One year we actually found a nest of tiny bunnies in our carrot garden – smart little buggers. “Harvest Hare” is a 4×6″ painting.

Acorns

Okay, “Acorns” is not the best title. In fact, it’s really boring. I blame it on the noticeable absence of a little critter in the painting. I’m still thinking I should add some sort of life to it – maybe a tiny black spider, or a little green inch-worm. What do you think? Anyone have a better title for this poorly-titled painting? If so, I’d love to hear your suggestions.

Well, there you have it! I hope you enjoyed my fall paintings, and I look forward to sharing some commissioned paintings I am working on in the very near future.

I hope the remainder of your fall is warm and happy!

  4. They are ALL so sweet! Lily is precious–definitely cute enough for a chidren’s book. That on a cover would certainly catch my eye!

    1. This is so great to know! Thank you, Rebecca. This painting of Lily will be the first glimpse of her in the book. She appears shy when she meets the main character, Lewis, but she’s actually full of excitement and life (which is perfect for Lewis’ serious demeanor).

  5. Awesome job Erin love the new addition to the card sets you made for fall !

    1. Thanks so very much! I’m drawn to detail, but love the light that watercolor allows to shine through, so detailed watercolor it is. Watercolor purists sometimes look down on paintings that aren’t loose, but I’m not sure I’m cut out for loose watercolors.

Also, so happy you like the fox kit! Thank you for your kind words, and for stopping by!
