Liebster Award: From One Blogger to Another

Thank you, Orla, for nominating me for the Liebster Award! Six months ago, I embarked on a new journey. A journey that I knew I would take at one point in my life, but wasn’t quite sure when. My life had been busy with growing up, going to college, finding a teaching job, getting married, buying a house, adopting a puppy, and gardening. Oh, and two little loves came into my life. Then, life got very busy! Parenting – something that cannot be explained, only experienced. Anyway, my two little ones are now 7 and 8-years old. All of the sudden I have a little extra time to myself each day.

Underneath a Pink Sky

Finally! The day had come for my journey to begin. My writing journey. A little bit of time that was just mine. Time to reflect, time to dream, and time to write about what inspires me, what I enjoy, and what makes me, well… me. Little did I know that six months after starting my journey, a wonderful blogger, Orla, who writes for Fancypaper blog, would nominate me for the Liebster Award (if you would like to know more about this award, please feel free to click here). An award that is passed on from blogger to blogger to recognize new blogs, help spread the awareness of these blogs, and to share the love. The word Liebster is German in origin and means dearest, sweetest, kindest, nicest, beloved, lovely, kind, pleasant, valued, cute, endearing, and welcome.

Orla writes: “For a little while, whenever I can, I will become Fancy Paper and delve into an indulgent world where I can find the person inside the Mammy!” Another mother, just like myself, using her writing skills to create, to reach out to others, to be herself. Head on over to fancypaperblog  to experience Orla’s fantastic writing pieces – real life stories that are full of truth, beauty, and humor. And, if you like her stories, follow Fancypaper to continue reading the fantastic stories. One of my favorite pieces of Orla’s is one of her most recent posts – A Near Drowning or The Tale of when Betsy Saved Gigi. It’s a story that will make you wonder, hold your breath, and breathe a sigh of relief.

Lupine

So, from one mama writer to another, here are some beautiful flowers for you, Orla. I want to thank you for nominating Unbound Roots for the Leibster award. Orla, you have inspired me as a writer, as a mother, and as an individual. Thank you!

Onto the award:

First I must answer ten questions that Orla has chosen for her nominees.

Orla’s Ten Questions for her Nominees

  1. Can you empathise with a fictional character?  Who and why?
  • Ayla is the main character in Jean. M. Auel’s “Earth’s Children” novels. She is a cro-magnon who is known for overcoming adversity with her will and wit. Ayla is also ingenious as she uses her skills, will, and wit to invent many useful tools and instruments. My life has been full of inventing, building, and creating – from stories, paintings, and photography to a chicken coop, deck, and shelves. Much like Ayla, once I create an idea in my head, I make it happen by researching, planning, and building. With a little preparation and determination I believe that anyone can do anything.

2. What Box Set would you choose if you could only have one for ever more.

  • I would have to say the Earth’s Children series by Jean M. Auel. I am not one to re-read a book because I have so many books I want to read, but the Earth’s Children series is one that I just can’t get rid of. I do plan on re-reading this series again. The amount of research that went into these novels is amazing, and the characters and relationships are unforgettable. I would recommend this series to each and every person.
  • If I could visit only one country it would be Sweden. I am 7/8 Swedish and still have family members living in the homeland. I hear that the landscape is very similar to what we have here in Minnesota, and that the beautiful lupine flowers line the streets just like they do here too. I would love to visit some of the homesteads that I know still exist, and visit the churches that hold a lot of my family’s genealogy information. I know that I can tempt my husband to visit with me by enticing him with the cold fly-fishing streams that await us.

4. Jack Nicholson, Jeff Bridges, Liam Neeson: who would you leave in charge of the                house and the pets?

  • Ummm… Can I get a re-cap of these actors? I’m not a movie watcher, so I have no idea of these three men’s character traits. Therefore, I would have to say none (well, and because it takes me a bit before I can fully trust someone). 🙂

5. Name the film that changed your life- if one did.

  • I’m guessing that you can probably guess my answer from the previous answer you read (if you read it). I can’t recall a film that changed my life. When I was younger, I watched the movie Dances With Wolves time and time again. I wished that I could live with the Native Americans. Living off of the land and riding horses day in and day out seemed like the perfect life to me. Today, I’m not sure I’d like to solely live off the land (although, I love the idea of living simply), but I’d sure like to ride horses day in and day out. I’m not sure this counts as changing my life, but it’s the closest it will come.

6.What is your memory of the time of the tragic September when Princess Diana died          (or alternatively) what were you up to 20 years ago this month?

  • Twenty years ago, I was 17 years old and just starting a new school year at the local high school. I remember my eyes being glued to the TV screen after the news of Princess Diana’s death had taken over the world. The coverage was so somber, so sad. Stories of Diana’s incredible life would be told for days following her death. I remember thinking about her boys and how her death would affect them. I couldn’t imagine growing up without a parent.

7. Afternoon tea, nite club and shots or long hike with a protein bar:  which is your                 go- to and why?

  • A long hike is always my go-to. There is just something about being out in nature that makes my heart and soul happy. The fresh air, exercise, and experiencing natural wonders are things that never grow old and keep me young.

Sawtooth Mountains

8.Which element of your personality has changed most since your youth?

  • I worry a lot less about what people may think of me, and do what I feel is right and what makes me happy.

9. Please tell me three people you would have to have at the Ultimate Dinner Party- no          limits!

  • My great-grandpa Falk, my grandma Eggert, and my mom. We all have a lot of stories to tell, things to discuss, and a lot of reminiscing to do.

10. Finally, A Sweet Ending. Which dessert is the ultimate sweet to end all sweets? ( I                am clearly watching too much Bake Off…)

  • If I could have any dessert, I would choose to have my grandma’s delicious chocolate malts. She always had the perfect ration of ice-cream, milk, chocolate syrup, and malt powder. Always my favorite treat when I was young.

Now, I select five to ten nominees of my own and provide ten questions for them to answer. In turn, these folks get to nominate ten other bloggers to keep spreading the recognition and love.

  1. Wow, I love your piece! You are far too kind in your compliments to me. I should have explained the actor one a little more😊 Jack Nicholson is a little villainous in movies or a quirky but loveable man with a devilish cheeky side. Jeff Bridges plays long haired, ‘far out’ style guys usually-fond of substance use and sometimes music. Liam Neeson is Irish and is mainly known for his role in a series called Taken where he fights tooth and nail, with great violence (and ruthlessness), to rescue his daughter from a kidnapping. They are the three- very random, like myself! ! 😁
Really enjoyed your answers and am delighted with your selection of nominees. Love them all too!

    1. Well, Jack Nicholson sounds like he’s the winner then! But, Liam Neeson could be a close second, because protecting your children is a must. Plus, I love his name. 😊 Thanks again for the nomination, dear Orla! This was fun!

  2. I love your answers – great Questions Orla! And yes, I was also very touched by the story of Betsy’s near drowning incident. I gave my wee girl a big hug after I read it.
Please may I answer number 4 for you – Liam Neeson! Not because he’s Irish, because I just think he’s brilliant! Love him!
And a big thanks for the nomination! 🙂

    1. Another vote for, Liam! And, you are very welcome, Gloria. 🙂

  3. Wow! Thank you soo much for the nomination! I can’t wait to answer your questions and pose some of my own! Thank you!

    1. You are very welcome! And, I can’t wait to read your answers. I love your witty writing. 🙂

  4. I love your answers and thank you so much for the nomination. I have a feeling i have a draft from this award previously, so I’ll have to take a peek and attempt to write it up.

Also, I remember when princess Diana died and I was so surprised by just how much everyone cared. I mean, I thought it was sad, but I have never met her, so I couldn’t cry actual tears for a distant figure that I only knew from the TV. I remember having classmates that were in tears and inconsolable and I just couldn’t quite understand why. Lots of people seemed to get swept up with mourning publicly.

Your comment made me remember how heartless I felt at the time. But I chatted to some friends about it recently, and one of my friends felt the same, but pretended to be sad because she didn’t want to be left out.

    1. Josy, first of all, you are very welcome. I love reading all of your posts, and seeing your beautiful pictures! As far as the Princess Diana comment goes, I completely get where you are coming from. Being that I was heree in the U.S., I didn’t see anyone cry over the news. However, I find that I easily get swept up in others’ emotions, hence being glued to the TV. To me, it was interesting to watch the news coverage over in the U.K. People were distraught, and I knew I wanted to learn more about this princess they mourned. This is why I sat and watched the news coverage. She seemed like a lovely, caring, and very-much loved individual.

  5. Thank you so much for the nomination! I’m excited to answer your questions– which I’m actually going to try to do this week!

And, I have to agree with you on number 8– when I was younger I was so much more concerned with what people thought of me than I was with my own happiness. Luckily, I’ve grown older and realized which is more important. 🙂

    1. Becca, you are very welcome! I can’t waitto read your answers. And, I guess that getting older has it’s benefits. 🙂

  6. What an honor it is to be recognized! Thank you so much!! Your grandma’s chocolate malt sounds AMAZING! I love malts!

    1. You are very welcome! I love your blog. 🙂 And, malts are amazing!!!

  7. Thank you for the nomination, Erin! I love your questions–my mind is already spinning on the answers. 🙂
A long hike really is the best restorative. I do my best thinking while running–trail running if possible.
I’m not surprised to see so many references to family and family history here. I love your posts about the farm and the Falks’. There’s so much goodness to mine there.

    1. Thanks so much, Angela! Can’t wait to read your answers. They are always so thoughtful and thorough. I look forward to your post, as always. x

  8. Thanks for the nomination although I’m not a “new” blogger – I’ve been blogging weekly since July 2012 – however, I’ve answered similar questions in a post a few years back:

Interesting question about Where you were when you heard about Princess Di’s death? I was at a family picnic in the grounds of St Peter’s Chapel at Bradwell on Sea, Essex. My children were 2,5,& 8 years old at the time (since added 2 more!) I must admit I hated travelling by road around Paris for a few years afterwards (especially the tunnels!)
